CERN to use Submer’s SmartPod solution for datacenter cooling and high-density computing PDF Print E-mail

Submer Technologies, a provider of immersion cooling for data center, has teamed up with CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

Headquartered in Geneva, the CERN is one of the largest scientific research centers in the world for particle physics. It will now use Submer SmartPod solution for data center cooling.

The Submer SmartPod is an optimized data center immersion cooling solution for variable workloads. It comes in a 22u and 45u configuration to dissipate 25kW to 50kW of heat extraction capacity. The SmartPod 45u is for medium density servers, while SmartPod 22u for HPC and high-density computing.

CERN will install and test SmartPod solution at its LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) experiment. The LHCb is CERN’s one of the seven particle physics detector experiments that collects data at the LHC accelerator.

“Our SmartPod aims at unprecedented compute densities in the confined space of the Large Hadron Collider and gives CERN the possibility to evaluate different types of hardware behaviour in immersion cooling” says Daniel Pope, CEO and Co-Founder of Submer.

“This strategic collaboration agreement with CERN marks a point in time for the acceptance of Immersion Cooling and the viability of our solution”.

According to CERN, the LHCb experiment specializes in investigating the slight differences between matter and antimatter by studying a type of particle called the “beauty quark”, or “b quark”.

Further, LHCb experiment also explores “what happened after the Big Bang that allowed matter to survive the Universe we inhabit today.”

Submer said that the installation of SmartPod at CERN will complete in September 2018.

Other than SmartPod, Submer also provides CryptoPod solution which is specifically optimized for crypto blockchain workloads.
